Gastric bypass

Gastric bypass surgery is a type of bariatric surgery. During gastric bypass surgery, your surgeon makes changes to your stomach and small intestine to change the way they absorb and digest food. Making you feel full faster and absorb fewer calories which result in weight loss.

Gastric bypass abroad

Gastric bypass is a method of treating obesity. During the operation, the volume of the stomach is reduced by separating the upper part of the stomach from the rest of the stomach, and the digestive tract is shortened by connecting the reduced stomach directly to the middle part of the small intestine. This limits the amount of food a person eats and reduces the number of calories and nutrients one absorbs as food bypasses part of the digestive system. Surgery-induced changes in hormones that help a person feel full for longer lead to the suppression of appetite and restoration of the metabolic syndrome caused by obesity.

Gastric bypass surgery is applied when other methods of treating obesity, such as diet and physical activity, are not effective, or when being overweight causes serious health problems.

This surgery can be performed on patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, or with a body mass index between 35 and 39.9. In rare cases, BMI may be lower, but patients have overweight-related health problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, etc.

Advantages of gastric bypass

  • effective weight loss – it is possible to lose 60 to 80 percent of excess weight;
  • reduced appetite and an increased feeling of satiety due to favorable hormonal changes;
  • the conscious choice of lower-calorie products and limiting fatty and sugary foods to avoid dumping syndrome, a syndrome that occurs when food passes into the small intestine too quickly and causes symptoms, such as nausea, weakness, sweating, fainting, and occasionally diarrhea after eating.

Disadvantages of gastric bypass:

  • higher risk of postoperative complications compared to other bariatric (obesity treatment) operations, but complications can be avoided with proper care;
  • aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should not be taken after surgery as they increase the risk of serious damage to the stomach;
  • after the operation, it is necessary to follow the dietary recommendations and take vitamin and mineral supplements throughout life. Otherwise, it may lead to long-term deficiencies of vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin B12, iron, calcium, and folate.

FAQs about gastric bypass surgery abroad

What's gastric bypass surgery?

Gastric bypass, also called Roux-en-Y (roo-en-wy) gastric bypass, is a type of weight-loss surgery that involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting the newly created pouch directly to the small intestine. After gastric bypass, swallowed food will go into this small pouch of the stomach and then directly into the small intestine, thereby bypassing most of your stomach and the first section of your small intestine.

Gastric bypass is one of the most commonly performed types of bariatric surgery. Gastric bypass is done when diet and exercise haven’t worked or when you have serious health problems because of your weight.

How long will I be off work with a bypass?

This depends upon what you do for a living, but if you have a sedentary occupation you can generally expect to be back at work about 2 weeks after gastric bypass, after which time the wounds should have healed and you will be feeling more comfortable. If you have a physically demanding job involving lifting etc, you may need a little longer.

Who is a good candidate for gastric bypass?

You typically qualify for bariatric surgery if you have a BMI higher than 35. A BMI of 30 to 35 is considered sufficient for undergoing gastric bypass surgery if a patient is present with type 2 diabetes or arterial hypertension.

Why do people go for surgery abroad?

Patients go for gastric bypass abroad for multiple reasons. Main ones are:

  • There are no (or very short) waiting lines for bariatric surgeries
  • Individual attention from the surgeons
  • Recommendations from previous patients, friends, or family
  • Top-quality service for affordable prices
  • Possibility for a refund from your local health board

Will I be insured?

Yes, absolutely. Every patient of our clinic is covered by reliable insurance resulting from surgical malpractice.

Why is gastric bypass cost lower in your clinic?

Our clinic is not based in the center of Stockholm or London and does not have to pay eye-watering rents. We also work with a limited number of patients and do not waste massive sums on marketing. Therefore, you pay only for the surgery & world-class rehabilitation (and not for an expensive location or advertising on TV or on the tube).

At the same time, you get an all-inclusive package (making your travel stress-free) when booking with us.

Is it safe?

Getting the surgery abroad involves similar risks as getting the surgery at home. For that reason, we recommend always checking the following:

  • The surgeons and their credentials. Preferably, ask for an online consultation to meet your surgeon before going abroad
  • What do the previous patients say about the clinic and their experience
  • Whether you will be insured

Never base your decision on the price alone.

Can I get a refund from my local health board?

You can have your surgery done for free by claiming a refund from your local health board. We are helping patients with the documentation needed in order to claim a refund after following the EU directive route for medical treatment abroad. Patients usually choose this route because of the long waiting list in their country of origin.

How soon can I travel back home after gastric bypass?

Most of the patients can travel back 6 days after the surgery.

For your flight back it is advisable to get special assistance to help to get in/out of the plane. The service is freely provided by the airports/airlines.

What about the recovery after gastric bypass surgery abroad?

Patients after gastric bypass and sleeve surgery need about a 2-3 week recovery period, (although some can take as long as 6 weeks) before they can return to work.

How soon will I be able to drive after gastric bypass?

You should not drive for 2-3 days after your operation to allow the effects of the anesthetic and any post-operative analgesia (painkillers) to wear off. Thereafter you may find driving a little uncomfortable until the port sites have fully healed, usually around 10 days.

When can I start exercising after surgery?

In order to get the most out of your weight loss surgery, it’s going to take a lot of hard work on your part post-surgery. That includes working out on a regular basis. Depending on your health and how your body is healing, your doctor may allow you to engage in light exercise in the first two weeks after surgery.

How much weight do you lose in the first month after gastric bypass?

During the first month, patients can expect an average weight loss of up to 30lbs/13kg. After three months, the percentage of overall excess loss can reach up to 30 percent. That number increases to 50 percent after six months – which means the expected weight loss translates to about 0,8kg per week.

What about the clinic & surgeons?

We like to say that our clinic (based in Lithuania, EU) is not a factory. That is we work only with a limited number of patients per year. That helps us to provide our best and give much-needed personal attention to the patients.

The clinic itself is equipped with the newest medical technologies. Naturally, it checks all the EU care standards and employs maximum safety measures. After surgeries, the patients stay in cozy single-bed rooms. It makes your recovery calm and pleasant.

Our brand is rated 4.8/5 by hundreds of UK & EU patients. See their (video) reviews here.
